Cakewalk Project5 Dimension Notes

Introduction

The Dimension is the sample-synthesizer synth that is part of the Cakewalk Project5 V2 software. This page serves as a repository of notes I am collecting about this instrument in order to supplement the information that is provided in the Project5 documentation. A lot of this information is gleaned from sources on the Internet such as the Project5 user forums as well as from personal experimentation.

DimensionalTips

René Ceballos (the creator and mastermind of Dimension) has posted some great Dimension tips on the Project5 forum. In order to make it easier to locate his tips I have created this shortcut search link into the Cakewalk forums:

'DimensionalTips by René'

And of course there is the PDF archive available with all the tips compiled into a single .PDF file.

Dimension Semi-Pro

Launching out from the popular PSYN-Tology tutorials, Project5 forum members and Dimension users now disect the Dimension synth with this tutoral series on the Cakewalk Project5 forums. In order to make it easier to locate the tips I have created this shortcut search link into the forums:

'Dimension Semi-Pro by Project5 Forum Members'

And as an added bonus here is the PDF archive available with all the tips compiled into a single .PDF file.

SFZ File Format

Dimension uses the SFZ file format for defining multisamples used in Dimension programs. The SFZ file is a straight text file, editable within Windows notepad.exe text editor program. There are some SFZ editors that may make it easier to modify a SFZ file (as opposed to using a text editor). RGCAudio also has a format specifications page to explain the SFZ format. Extranslator is able to read the SFZ format.

tweakDimension

Updated (2005/11/26)! Now supports Dimension Pro!

According to the Dimension documentation that came with the product, the Dimension synth has a registry entry that can be manipulated to allow Dimension to use an alternative path as its default multisample folder. I have written a program called 'tweakDimension' that will allow you to easily select a folder to use for this alternative path so you don't have to edit the registry.

To use the program just unzip the download file (tweakDimension.zip) and copy the tweakDimension.exe executable to anywhere you desire on your system. Create a shortcut to it on your desktop or programs menu. There is no installation for it. Just run the application.

tweakDimension will not allow you to change paths if it does not detect the original registry entry created by the Dimension installer. If the correct registry entry is detected, then it will allow you to type a directory path into the edit box. You may also click the "Select" button to open a directory selection dialog box. The program automatically appends the required trailing slash to the path.

Exit the program by clicking the close button in the upper right-hand corner of the program's main window. If you have modified the path it will prompt you to confirm that you want the updated value saved back to the registry.
